The Matchbox Collectibles series was a spin off from
the normal Matchbox series. When these models were introduced, Matchbox tried to
enter the direct mailorder business and thought that, by issueing a special
series of 'collectibles' as a first step, they could eventually become a major web retailer of
high end collectibles. The Matchbox Collectibles division had their own tooling capabilities
so they could create all new models besides using models from the standard Matchbox toy
line. What is confusing however, is that throughout the life of this division, the
Matchbox toys division also released toys using the Matchbox Collectibles name.
The first series of models that was released under the Matchbox Collectibles
name was a series of beer trucks with trailers. The trailers were from new
moulds but the tractors (a Mack CH600, a Kenworth conventional and cabover, a Ford Areomax and
a Peterbilt conventional) were upgraded Matchbox toy line cabs. The cabs did get better
detailing and painting and were equipped with new wheels and tires. After this
first series, Matchbox Collectibles released a series of 6 truck/trailer
combinations with different Harley Davidson prints.
In 1998 Matchbox Collectibles released a series of six models with fuel
trailers, the cabs that were used were the same as in the first series, but the
trucks were equipped with an all new fuel trailer. The following
brandnames were available: Citgo, BP, Sunoco, Mobil, Shell and Texaco. Next to
this series, there was a Coca-Cola series of six tractor/trailers bearing different
vintage Coca-Cola prints.
In 1999 the first all new truck cabs were released, a 1939 Peterbilt conventional and 1956
Mack B61, these cabs came from moulds that were made by the Matchbox
Collectibles division. The trailers and tractors were decorated in billboard type
graphics with 1950's era designs but didn't resemble any prototype. Available
brandnames were: Michelin, Penzoil, Sinclair, Champion, Pep Boys and Texaco.
Also in 1999, Matchbox Collectibles released a series called 'Masters of the
Highway', these were modern trucks/ trailers that consisted of the trailers that were
also used in the beer and Harley-Davidson series and the reworked Matchbox Ford Areomax and Mack
CH600 toy line cabs. The following brandnames were available: Consolidated Freightways, Roadway, Overnite and Yellow
Freight.
