Model International / PreP / Praliné

Model International (Duve und Schultz OHG, Mörfelden-Walldorf) was founded in 1974 as a mailorder company for 1/43 carmodels and modelkits. To expand their line of business Model International started to make their own 1/43 white-metal kits and became the distributor for the Spanish made 1/87 EKO models. Due to the good quality of the 1/43 kits these became very popular, and this was one of the reasons Model International started the Walldorf Mini line of white-metal kits in 1/87. The first Walldorf Mini kits were released in 1979.

In 1981, the company was reformed into Duve GmbH and, because the quality of the white-metal kits could not keep up with the quality of mass-produced injection moulded plastic models, decided to start making models in plastic. This, ofcourse, required investments in machinery and expensive moulds. After a lot of pre-production problems, including the bankruptcy of one of the suppliers, the first plastic models were available under the PreP name in 1981. The first Praline models came onto the market in 1982. In 1986 Praline outsourced their distribution in Germany to Revell, but after several years this agreement ended and the model were distributed directly by Praline again. In 1991 Praline relocated to St. Georgen in the Black Forest area and moved to Schönheide in 1993. In 1994 Praline was sold to/taken over by Busch, Praline models still carrying the Praline name on the bottom-plate have been available for several years in the Busch program but the Praline logo seems to have disappeared completely now.

Although we have found no documentation on Walldorf Mini cat# 124014 and 124017, and we are not sure if these were ever released, fact is, that the moulds for the Walldorf Mini kits were bought by  'Auto Replicas'. The models from these moulds were the only 17 models ever released by 'Auto Replicas'  and among the well-known Walldorf kits there are two types, a Fiat truck and a Rolls Royce saloon that may be the missing items from the Walldorf Mini list.

* Kit 124007 was sold as a BMW 327 coupe (labelled as such on the box), but it is actually a convertible.

Modell International also released the model of the VW Karman Ghia II that was originally made by Fischer as a kit. The bottomplate of the model still had the Fischer marking (FM2) on it.

We know of two kits, one with just the VW, the other one also contains the trailer and gliderplane which were also originally made by Fischer.

Remarks

-  All Mercedes 220 models had one-piece wheel/tire/axle units until 1982. In 1983 the wheels where changed to a one-piece rim / axle with soft plastic 'tires'.
-  The Mercedes-Benz O302 buses listed under ref# 167101 to 167119 were made by JoyToy from Greece.
-  The trailers listed under ref# 780001 to 780012 were made by Pemco of Hongkong
-  The PreP name was discontinued in 1986, several of the Prep models reappeared as Praline models.
-  The Mercedes 220 model stems from a mould that was originally made for Brekina who had ordered a mould for a Mercedes 190 but was not satisfied with the quality.
This mould was then reworked so a Mercedes 220 could be made from it and sold on to Modell International.
